Window blinds, like with the rest of your home, need to be looked after and cleaned. Make sure you know what the material of your blinds is and the style as they require different methods of care. If you are unsure we will be happy to help.
Be cautious when cleaning the window itself that glass cleaners are sprayed onto a cloth rather than straight onto a window to avoid splattering any of the cleaning product on the blinds. Liquids and chemicals will damage many of the materials.
Wooden and faux wooden blinds can be cleaned using a dry and soft feather duster, dusting cloth/mitt or clean cloth. Cleaners and chemical solvents are not recommended to be used as they can damage or scratch the surface and any liquids can cause severe damp.
Aluminium blinds require an over-the-counter blind cleaner, when used on a soft cloth.
Other metal or vinyl blinds can be quickly washed with a mix of ammonia and water, or removed for a deep clean with the same mix or warm soapy water. If the blinds are removed for cleaning they can be hung to dry.
Fabric blinds need to be cared for carefully and can be lightly dusted with a clean dusting cloth.
Venetian blinds can be dusted with a clean, dry cloth on a regular basis, washed thoroughly with a damp cloth, or cleaned using a vacuum cleaner on the lowest setting. If you are using water ensure that the steel headrail of the blind is completely dry to avoid rusting.
Vertical blinds and pleated blinds are easily looked after with a soft, dry dusting cloth.
Roller blinds need a soft duster although it is recommended that any stains be removed immediately with a very lightly dampened cloth. Avoid any damage or discolouration to the fabric by rubbing gently.
Roman blinds can be vacuumed with an upholstery attachment or using a can of compressed air to blow over the blind, and then any excess dust can be removed with a feather duster. Again, a lightly dampened cloth can be used but make sure not to apply too much pressure to the fabric.
